Since 1913, the Reading Symphony Orchestra has been providing uninterrupted access to exceptional classical music to the citizens of Berks County and beyond. Under its current music director Andrew Constantine, the orchestra currently performs six concerts annually on its Classics series with additional Pops performances, and collaborations with other community performing arts organizations.

Rimsky-Korsakov’s iconic piece which tells the tale of one of the world’s greatest storytellers is paired with Mussorgsky’s spell-binding Night on Bald Mountain and Prokofiev’s second Violin Concerto featuring British virtuoso Matthew Trusler.

The music of Sibelius embodies the spirit of Scandinavia and his Second Symphony is no exception, with its spirit of musical patriotism. The work is paired with Joel Puckett’s Short Stories, a series of eight vignettes, in a new arrangement for orchestra and string quartet, as well as Beethoven’s Egmont Overture.

Longtime friends and collaborators, Kirsti Manna and Jonathan Birchfield capture the essence of friendship through music in this dynamic performance. The duo inspires stylistic comparisons to Carole King and James Taylor, with Kirsti’s unique artistry on piano and vocals alongside Jonathan’s velvety vocals and guitar. They perform favorites such as “How Sweet It Is,” “Carolina in My Mind,” “I Feel the Earth Move,” and “You’ve Got a Friend.”

Acclaimed pianist Julio Elizalde is featured in Beethoven’s third Piano Concerto, the last of his concertos echoing the style of Haydn and Mozart. Rounding out the program is Estonian composer Arvo Pärt’s pattern-based Fratres and Schumann’s majestic and exuberant Third Symphony.

Aaron Copland’s majestic Lincoln Portrait, a tribute to our nation’s sixteenth president, comes alive in a new way with photochoreography by Westwater Arts depicting images from the Civil War era. The program also includes Vaughan Williams’ hymn-woven Symphony No. 5 in D Major, together with Interludes by Philip Glass, and George Butterworth’s The Banks of Green Willow.
